OVERVIEW

The Castello di Gallese is one of Tuscia’s most significant Renaissance palaces, transformed from a medieval fortress into a ducal residence in the 16th century under Cardinal Marco Sittico Altemps, nephew of Pope Pius IV. Since 1560, this palazzo has remained the private residence of the same family—nearly five centuries of unbroken habitation.

The castle is steeped in history and legend, including the tumultuous love affair between poet Gabriele d’Annunzio and Maria Hardouin di Gallese, immortalized by Stendhal. The property includes a fascinating underground grotto and lake.

This one-bedroom residence in the castello’s main courtyard combines independent living with the extraordinary experience of residing in a historic palazzo. The apartment includes a formal dining room, a spacious living room, a fully equipped kitchen, and a bedroom with an en-suite bathroom. All rooms open onto a magnificent loggia which stretches along the famous Turtle garden. Original architectural elements throughout reflect the Renaissance heritage.

The apartment’s highlight is exclusive access to the Turtle Garden—a private outdoor sanctuary within the castello grounds. A generous loggia provides elegant outdoor dining, while a sitting area within the garden offers a peaceful retreat surrounded by historic walls.

Guests become temporary residents of a living palazzo where daily life unfolds within rooms that have witnessed centuries of Italian history—an experience available to few within walls that have sheltered the same family for over 450 years.

One night minimum stay.

Things to do

Why Choose Tuscia? It’s a land where tourism remains authentic. It offers a perfect mix of:

  • Monumental Art: Villas and noble palaces without equal
  • Nature and Relaxation: Volcanic lakes and pristine nature reserves
  • Exceptional Gastronomy: Extra virgin olive oil, Monti Cimini hazelnuts, and historic wines like Est! Est!! Est!!!

In summary: From the frescoed halls of Caprarola to the silence of Civita, Tuscia is the perfect destination for those seeking beauty, history, and genuine flavors away from crowded routes.

  • Gallese. An authentic medieval borgo built on a tufa cliff, with narrow winding streets, ancient stone houses, and a commanding tower gate. Not to miss: The Basilica di San Famiano and the WWF Oasis of Pian Sant’Angelo for an immersion in nature among gorges and archaeological remains. The event: August’s “Bengalata,” a unique fireworks display that illuminates the medieval walls.
  • Civita di Bagnoregio. A short drive from Gallese, one of the most striking historic villages in central Italy. Accessible only by footbridge, it offers a compact but powerful combination of medieval architecture, dramatic landscape, and refined atmosphere. Best visited early or late in the day, it feels more contemplative than touristic.
  • Lake Bolsena. Europe’s largest volcanic lake, perfect for relaxing among fishing villages like Marta and Capodimonte.
  • Viterbo – The Papal Quarter. One of the best-preserved medieval cities in Italy. The Papal Palace and the surrounding San Pellegrino quarter offer a rare sense of architectural coherence, with stone towers, loggias, and narrow streets that have remained largely unchanged. It is an intellectual and historically dense visit rather than a scenic one.
  • Villa Lante, Bagnaia. Among the most refined Italian Renaissance gardens. Its value lies in proportion, geometry, and hydraulic ingenuity rather than scale. The terraced gardens, fountains, and architectural details create a perfectly controlled environment, elegant and restrained, ideal for guests with an appreciation for classical design.
  • Palazzo Farnese, Caprarola. This monumental Renaissance palace is one of the most important aristocratic residences in Italy. Its pentagonal structure, frescoed interiors, and formal gardens reflect power expressed through architecture and order. The visit is substantial and formal, suited to guests interested in noble history and architectural ambition.
  • Orte and the Historic Center. Orte is a compact hill town with a strong historic identity and a discreet, almost private atmosphere. The historic center rewards slow exploration, with layered architecture and views over the Tiber valley. It remains largely overlooked, making it particularly appealing to travelers seeking places that feel undiscovered.
  • Bomarzo – The Sacred Wood. The Parco dei Mostri of Bomarzo is an intellectual curiosity rather than a conventional garden. Created in the 16th century, it combines sculpture, symbolism, and landscape in a way that feels intentional and cultivated rather than decorative. It is best appreciated by visitors with an interest in Renaissance thought and unconventional aesthetics.
  • Sutri – Archaeological Park and Cathedral. Sutri offers a rare concentration of archaeological and early Christian sites in a compact setting. The Roman amphitheater carved into the rock, the Mithraeum, and the medieval cathedral create a visit that is quiet, cultured, and historically layered, without the presence of mass tourism.
