OVERVIEW

We felt an instant connection to Podere Paterno, and believe it is a perfect place for weddings or large family gatherings. The cool vibe, vintage design, and high level of service make it the perfect location for an intimate wedding or family gathering. The estate’s chef, Romy, is known for his memorable meals using homegrown ingredients and local produce.

Olivia inherited this former Equestrian Estate dedicated to breeding thoroughbred racehorses from her father. She transformed the rural dwelling into a joyful retreat with a vintage mix of design and outdoor spaces inspired by her travels to distant lands.

Among the estate’s most enchanting spaces is a covered outdoor summer living room furnished with vibrant Moroccan rugs, large soft seating, and a vintage jukebox. Next door is a covered dining area that overlooks the villa’s vegetable garden.

The living rooms and suites are furnished in a contemporary vintage style, informally mixing old and new.

Podere Paterno retains its deep connection to family traditions. Horses now roam freely as a wild herd, playing a central role in the healing experience of guests. Therapy sessions, ranging from one-hour workshops to five-day retreats, guided by a therapist, help guests reduce fear and anxiety.

The surrounding landscape resembles a real-life painting. Eyes wander across the Tuscia hills, tracing Viterbo’s profiles, the outlines of the Cimini Mountains, and the silhouettes of Montefiascone and Tuscania. In the courtyard, the memory of the territory is revealed through basalt stones and an ancient fountain, both testaments to the civilizations that have passed through these lands.

Evenings here are rituals of sharing. A sunset aperitif, when light dissolves into shades of gold and pink, marks the beginning of convivial experiences. The table becomes a place of encounter, stars cover the sky like a precious mantle, and stories intertwine like the rows of olive trees in the surrounding fields.

Additional guests can sleep in the nearby town of Vetralla (10 minutes by car), famous for its historic center and proximity to Lake Vico. Alternatively, Viterbo is known for its thermal baths, rich traditions, and the historic procession of the “Macchina di Santa Rosa.” The city has Etruscan origins but became particularly significant during the Middle Ages when it was selected as a papal residence.

Children under 10 years of age are not recommended for this property.

Things to do
  • Viterbo – The city of the Popes, where traces of the Etruscan civilization merge with Medieval architecture and beneficial spa waters. Viterbo has many and varied faces, from the aristocratic palaces in Piazza del Plebiscito to the authentic Medieval atmosphere of the San Pellegrino district and the Papal and Priori Palaces, the Romanesque Cathedral of San Lorenzo, the Governor’s Palace, and the Palace of the Podestà. Viterbo is unrivalled even as regards traditions.
  • The Faggeta Vetusta of the Cimini Mountains was declared a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 2017, as proof of its extraordinary beauty and importance. The beech forest, with an extension of about 50 hectares, is among the most majestic and imposing in central Italy and best explored on foot, horseback or mountain bike. It develops along the slopes of Mount Cimino, the highest peak of the Lazio Apennine chain of the Cimini Mountains and the entire province of Viterbo.
  • Tuscania boasts 7th-century BCE Etruscan origins and was a flourishing settlement by the 4th century BCE. Numerous necropolises surround San Pietro hill. The Archaeological Museum houses important Etruscan aristocratic tombs and Roman artifacts. Key sites include the 8th-century Basilica of San Pietro, Santa Maria Maggiore Church, and the ancient Via Clodia, now popular for hiking and horseback riding.
  • Tarquinia’s Etruscan Necropolis. This UNESCO World Heritage site offers a rare glimpse into the mysterious world of the Etruscans through its incredibly preserved tomb paintings. The vibrant frescoes show scenes from daily life—everything from lively banquets and dances to more solemn moments. The most famous tombs include the Tomb of the Bulls, the Tomb of the Augurs, and the Tomb of the Leopards.
  • Vitorchiano Perched on volcanic rock (specifically peperino stone), this tiny town overlooks the lush Vezza Valley. For such a small place, Vitorchiano offers plenty to see: the Romanesque church of San Pietro, the beautiful 13th-century Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo, and the 14th-century Santissima Trinità. Don’t miss the Madonna di San Nicola church, where gorgeous frescoes decorate the walls and ceiling.
  • Villa Lante, in the medieval village of Bagnaia, near Viterbo, is a historic place and a magnificent example of Italian gardens, made up of terraces, ancient fountains, expertly cared for hedges, and statues dating from the 1500s
  • The splendor of Palazzo Farnese is framed by green gardens, tree-lined avenues, ancient fountains and magnificent ornamental water features. Located in Caprarola – 20 km from Viterbo – this late Renaissance site is home inside to 5 floors frescoed by various artists and splendid architectural solutions such as the Scala Regia, a magnificent helical staircase supported by 30 Doric columns.
  • Bosco Sacro di Bomarzo. Also known as Parco dei Mostri (Park of Monsters) after the grotesque sculptures set in a surreal atmosphere, the Sacred Wood is an experience that inspires fantasy and imagination. Populated by dreamlike and bizarre creatures carved in the rock, we set off here on a fantastic journey through spells, mysteries and illusions.

  • Civita di Bagnoregio. Officially recognized as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, Civita di Bagnoregio is a small and charming village perched on a tufa hill that can only be reached over a long pedestrian bridge. There is the sensation that time has stopped after passing through the main gate. A maze of alleys spreads out from the central square, all leading to balconies and terraces in turn opening onto the splendid panorama of the Valle dei Calanchi, a constantly changing landscape, where the limestone and sandy clay terrain is shaped by atmospheric agents.
  • Calcata is perched on a high and immense volcanic outcrop in the Treja valley. This Mediaeval village , rich in history, is home to numerous artists and artisans who have taken refuge here over time to leave behind them the hectic life of large cities and create a lifestyle on a more human scale. Calcata is so unique because of the small, ancient homes carved into the tufa, alternating with creative workshops where you can buy arts and crafts items
  • Orvieto sits high on a volcanic rock plateau. The city rises almost vertically from the surrounding valley, with impressive tuff cliffs and medieval walls that once made it nearly impossible to conquer. The crowning jewel is the Duomo, dating back to 1290, with its incredible mosaic-covered facade that gleams in the sunlight.
